Tucked within the town of East Gwillimbury, Holland Landing is a charming community perched along the East Holland River, just north of Newmarket in York Region. The Community of Holland Landing is located in East Gwillimbury, Region of York and sits on the northern edge of Toronto along the Oak Ridges moraine watershed area and on the north boundary of the Town of Newmarket. This area is unique in that it is still a relatively rural area with all that small town ambiance, and is just 15 minutes north to the recreational areas of Lake Simcoe for the beaches & boating and about 3 min south to the big box area on the north boundary of Newmarket. You can hit these nearby stores and shop till you drop, then wander the farm fields and pick wildflowers, all in the same afternoon. One of the prettiest, lushest public golf courses "Silver Lakes" is only about a 5-8 min. drive. Access to the City of Toronto for communters is phenomenal. The GO train staion is on the south border of East Gwillimbury just a few minutes away, or continue another 5 minutes east and hop onto Hwy 404. Head west through Bradford or down and across Hwy 9 to Hwy 400. On the north boundary of Holland Landing is the controversial future Bradford bypass which could directly link to Hwy 404 and to Hwy 400.
It blends small-town comfort with scenic natural surroundings and a strong sense of community. Its gently rolling hills, riverside setting, and easy access to both urban and rural amenities make it a hidden gem for families, professionals, and retirees alike. Holland Landing offers a slower pace of life without sacrificing access to modern conveniences or connectivity to the Greater Toronto Area.
Holland Landing has deep historical roots, once envisioned as the capital's inland naval base during the War of 1812. Remnants of this rich past still echo through the landscape—most notably at the Holland Landing Historical Society and Anchor Park, where the famous anchor monument commemorates its role in early Canadian transportation and trade. Holland Landing can lay claim to having had four historic names over its history. During the early years, there were three separate names for the community that appeared on official documents, Gwillimbury Town, so named by John Simcoe, St. Albans, chosen they say because it sounded aristocratic, and Beverley, named by Peter Robinson to honour his brother Beverley Robinson. Holland Landing is best known today for its local relic of the War of 1812, an anchor said to be capable of holding the largest ocean frigate. I have heard several stories about this anchor over the years. The district of Penetanguishene was a strategic point on the Upper Great Lakes and was chosen as the site of a naval yard. Iron ships were constructed there and anchors at that time were not being made in Canada, so military authorities sent one forged in the dockyards at Chatham in England. The location of this early North West Company fort on the Holland River has been virtually lost to history. The only clue we have is that it was located along the river seven miles and 53 chains south from the entrance to Lake Simcoe. The community remains proud of its heritage, which is reflected in its well-preserved landmarks, tight-knit feel, and intergenerational pride among longtime residents.
Nature lovers will feel right at home in Holland Landing. The East Holland River offers scenic trails and waterfront walks, while Anchor Park and the Joe Kelly Trail provide ample opportunities for cycling, birdwatching, fishing, and peaceful reflection. Families enjoy access to soccer fields, playgrounds, and outdoor courts, while proximity to the Yonge Greenlands, conservation areas, and nearby Sharon Creek Trail ensures outdoor adventures are always within reach.
Beyond its natural beauty, Holland Landing is home to several charming and unique attractions. The East Gwillimbury Public Library – Holland Landing Branch serves as a cultural hub, offering everything from children’s programming to digital innovation labs. Local farms, markets, and seasonal events (like outdoor movie nights and holiday parades) add colour and community spirit. And being just a stone’s throw from Upper Canada Mall, Sharon Temple National Historic Site, and Newmarket’s Main Street means there’s always something interesting to explore. Holland Landing also has its own private airport, where many local pilots keep their small planes, its a tough little airport with a single short, sloped runway, so best bbe an experienced pilot
Despite its cozy, residential feel, Holland Landing residents enjoy quick access to everyday essentials. You'll find grocery stores, pharmacies, health clinics, and schools within minutes, as well as recreation facilities like the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex. Larger retail and medical services are a short drive away in Newmarket, while planned growth in East Gwillimbury promises even more amenities in the coming years.
Strategically located near major highways like the 404 and Highway 9, Holland Landing is an ideal home base for commuters heading to Toronto, Markham, or Barrie. The GO Transit system (via nearby East Gwillimbury and Newmarket stations) enhances accessibility while minimizing stress. East Gwillimbury is one of Ontario’s fastest-growing municipalities, and Holland Landing stands to benefit from planned infrastructure, residential, and commercial development—without losing its village charm.
If we were to draw a line from what is now Holland Landing southeasterly to the mouth of the Rouge River, along the shore of Lake Ontario west over to the Humber and back north to Holland Landing, this wedge of enclosed land would represent a uniquely historic region containing three major trails all conversing at Holland Landing — the Humber, the Don and the Rouge.
These trails were not merely haphazard paths through the forest; they were the highways, the carrying places, that connected Lake Ontario with the lands lying beyond Lake Simcoe, that vast uncharted wilderness known by the Indian name Toronteau. At one time this name applied to all the area between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay.
This new road Simcoe would name Yonge Street in honour of Sir George Yonge, minister for war. Lake la Claies was renamed Lake Simcoe in honour of his father, and the river was to be called the Holland River after Major-Gen. Samuel Holland, surveyor general of Quebec.
Holland Landing offers the best of both worlds: the peacefulness of a riverside community with the perks of urban proximity. Whether you’re raising a family, downsizing for retirement, or simply seeking a quieter lifestyle surrounded by nature and history, Holland Landing is a welcoming, evolving community that’s rich in character, connected to opportunity, and full of promise for the future.

What's the scoop on the Bradford Bypass?
The Ontario Government is planning to build a 16.2 kilometre long, 4-lane freeway connecting Highway 400 and Highway 404. Dubbed the Bradford Bypass, the highway will extend from Highway 400 between Lines 8 and 9 in Bradford, West Gwillimbury, will cross a small portion of King Township and will connect to Highway 404 between Queensville Sideroad and Holborn Road in East Gwillimbury. There are proposed full and partial interchanges, as well as grade separated crossings at intersecting municipal roads and watercourses, including the Holland River and Holland River East Branch.
The Holland Landing Yonge Street Revitalization is a collaborative project that aims to revitalize the downtown Holland Landing/Yonge Street area through streetscape and infrastructure improvements. The project area focuses on Yonge Street from Mount Albert Road to Doane Road including portions of intersecting side streets at the main intersection of Bradford Street/Thompson Drive and intersecting local streets throughout the corridor,
